The ‘Academische Kliniek voor Mondzorg Arnhem’ (AKMA-Academic Clinic for Dental Care) is a clinical trainingcentre for dental science. The Academy is a joint initiative of the department Dental Care of the HAN (Hogeschool Arnhem) and the subfaculty of the UMC st. Radboud University at Nijmegen. The clinic closely cooperates with the faculties for Dental Science of the ROCs Arnhem and Nijmegen. This is a truly unique initiative in the field of dental care in the Netherlands, because dentists, parodontologists and dental assistants in training are taught here to work together as a team in a setting that bears close similarity to everyday practice. Furthermore the clinic in Arnhem will also serve as a centre for juvenile dental care. The clinic has 30 chairs. Under close supervision of experienced dentists and parodontologists students will receive extensive field practice. Working in a team of dental professionals is the reaction to the changes in dental care that took place over the past few years. Formerly patients used to visit dentists till their forties, after which stage in life it was decided to take dentures. Nowadays patients prefer to preserve their own teeth as long as possible resulting in ever-increasing and more complex problems in the field of dental science. These changes in dental care put special demand on the education of the dental specialists and their training facilities.
